Workshop Wednesday: Shoot for the Moon

I don't know about you, but I often find it difficult to teach Science.  Sometimes it's hard to find time in our day to complete a quality science lesson or activity.  This year with the use of my Interactive Science Notebooks I have been getting to Science more than before, and the best part I ENJOY teaching it!

This week we worked on Phases of the Moon and I was able to tie it back to our literacy lessons as well...double like!

We read The Man in the Moon for our RL skills and What the MOON Is Like for our RI skills.  We related facts from our informational text to information presented in our fictional text.  I love this time of year of teaching because the students are able to make the connections as we are reading, not after I ask them comprehension questions!

As you know I LOVE using technology and videos in all of my lessons.  We watched Brain Pop's Moon video and Phases of the Moon video, and my students took notes as they watched.

Students then created Collaboration Cuties Moon Book to show what they have learned this week.  I love to save my copies so I copied the book in mini-size!  My kids actually like working on the mini-size books, my girls think they are cute and my kids who don't like to work think they are doing less.  (When in reality they are doing the same work, they just have to write smaller :) )

My students enjoyed making their books and couldn't wait to take them home and share them with their parents.  To extend our skill I told our kids that there will be a LUNAR ECLIPSE April 15th!  Even though I want them to get their sleep I told them to set their alarms between 2-4 AM to look out the window for see the phenomenon.

Science is just so fun to teach.. I hope you share the love! So some friends and I have teamed up with Educents for an amazing bundle of instant downloads for you!

For a limited time it is $10.99 from Educents which is about 65% off!  It also includes these other great products so there is sure to things you love!

  2. The moon is so fun to teach!! Did you ever check out the phases of the moon rap I posted a while back? The kids love it and actually remember the phases in order because of it! :)

  3. Great stuff! I am a huge science nerd! Have you ever used Papa Please Get the Moon for Me? by Eric Carle? It's a fun book since it literally folds out! I use it when teaching the phases of the moon, but it can also be related to sequencing and other ELA areas.

  4. I really need to get on board with the whole interactive notebook craze...I only use them sporadically in reading and like the idea of science notebooks.
