The Stranger by Chris Van Allsburg is one of my all time favorite stories! This is a wonderful story for teaching making inferences. The story starts with farmer Bailey finding the stranger and bringing him home. {Farmer Bailey actually hits the stranger with his truck and thought he had hit a dear. Not the nicest beginning to a story.}
As the story progresses we find out information about the stranger through the other character's experiences with him. The stranger does not speak and does not know who he is. Through the clues readers make inferences as to who the stranger is.
The stranger finally remembers who he is and ends up leaving the Bailey farm to continue on with his "job". The author never reveals to the reader who the stranger is but, through inferencing you can determine the stranger is ..................................Jack Frost :)
I am actually reading this story with my kids this week to review making inferences and RL4.3. I am going to have my kids also complete my Reading Feast Craftivity for our November Bulletin Board.

I did this book a few weeks ago for predicting and love it! We talked about how you have to revise your predictions as you go along, and that sometimes you still don't get it right. They were so shocked in the end!
