Mathematical Monday...200th Post!!

WOW!  My 200th post!  I am excited that is on a Mathematical Monday post, very fitting!  I am continuing my area and perimeter post from last week.  Due to our "Snowcation" last week I did not have my observation and changed my plans a little.  My kids were very hyper and talkative today, so we stuck to just some good 'ole hands on fun!

I posed this investigation on the Smartboard and had students copy the questions into their notebooks.  I then provided student teams with a roll of toilet paper.  Each roll had a different amount of paper on it.  I did this for a reason, so we could compare the variety of answers.

I assigned each team a place in the hallway or classroom to work out the problems.

This group focused on the second question first.  They were the only group to remember that a side of a rectangle can be 1 unit.  They were the first team to answer this question.

This group limited themselves to the carpet area only.  So I challenged them to determine what the longest side they could create using all of their paper on their roll.  They needed to determine the total number of sheets in order to find the answer.

Students wrote their answers into their notebooks. {I love this picture!}  Once all TP was cleaned up I wrote the dimensions of each team's rectangle on the board.  I then had the students determine who created a rectangle with the largest perimeter and the largest area.

I had two PIN IT TO WIN IT Contest last week and excited to announce the winners!

Congratulations to Suzy Q. for winning the Area & Perimeter Task Cards!

Congratulations to Mrs. Pleasant for winning my The Scarlet Stockings Spy Bundle!

  1. Congratulations on your 200th Post! We haven't started Area and Perimeter yet, but I am storing this idea in my memory banks! We're dealing with Decimals at the moment and I have raided the Smart Exchange for ideas. Wish me luck.

  2. Oh my goodness I LOVE this area and perimeter task!

We're doing measurement this term and this is an awesome intro to it! The kids will definitely remember this lesson! Thanks for sharing!

  3. I am so proud of you! 200th and the tp looks like loads of fun!

  4. Wow! Congrats on your 200th post! I love this area/perimeter activity! My kids have really been struggling with problem solving with area and perimeter so maybe this will help them! I'm so glad to link up this week!

    Keep Calm and Hoot On

  5. Congratulations on 200 posts! Have a great week.

    Not very fancy

  6. I absolutely love this idea for area & perimeter! I have never thought about using TP for this task, yet it sounds like it would work perfectly, especially since kids can count each sheet as a unit! Definitely going to pin this post onto my math board. :) Congrats on your 200th post by the way!
