Workshop Wednesday {Guided Reading Book}

So, I had this post written and ready to go and then I accidentally deleted it!  Still no idea how it happened...ugh!

As mentioned in a previous Workshop Wednesday I am unable to meet in small groups like I would like with this year's group.  At the beginning of the year when I was pulling my hair out attempting to meet with small groups we read Runaway Ralph by Beverly Clearly.  I love using this book because it lends itself to a variety of CCS.
We focused on context clues, character development, character comparison, theme, summarizing, vocabulary, and a variety of comprehension questions.  My students really enjoyed this book, they especially loved watching the movie when we completed it.  Did you even know there was a movie for Runaway Ralph?  Students compared and contrasted the book and the movie as well.

While we read the book this year I created a Runaway Ralph unit.  It can be used for small group or whole group instruction.  You can purchase it here.

This is one of my favorite activities for the book.  I divided students up into groups and they focused on one of the following standards/skills theme, details, summarizing, and character development.  Each group presented their answers and the rest of the groups added the information to their brochures, I call this a jigsaw activity.  On their own students gave their opinion of the text and drew a picture for the front.

I have had a GREAT response to my new Monthly Goal linky party!  I hope you link up and join in the fun!  It is open until May 10th :)

  4. This is such a cute book. The third grade teacher does it as a read aloud so I don't use it, but I know they love it.
